Dr. Carlo Sarzana di Sant’Ippolito Carlo Sarzana di Sant’Ippolito is honorary deputy president of the Italian Court of Cassation and is listed in the special register of lawyers admitted to practise before the higher courts. At Sarzana & Partners he handles litigation before the Court of Cassation.

Career in the judiciary

Carlo Sarzana served as deputy president of the pre-trial investigation judges at the Court of Rome. He spent his entire career in the judiciary, working mainly on white-collar crime, insolvency law and computer crime. He was a member of the interministerial committee for information and telecommunications security in the public administration.

Work at the Council of Europe

At the Council of Europe he held several roles. He was vice-chairman of the committee of experts on economic and computer crime and, later, of the committee of experts on the procedural aspects of the fight against economic and computer crime. These committees drafted Recommendations No. R (89) 9 and R (95) 13, among the first international texts on computer crime.

Research and publications

He led research on insolvency law funded by the Italian National Research Council. He co-authored several volumes of the theoretical and practical Commentary on insolvency law edited by V. De Martino and published by PEM. He has written on legal, sociological, criminological and legal-informatics subjects.

Teaching and training of the judiciary

He taught on the SISDE specialisation courses in techno-intelligence and on the specialisation and refresher courses in forensic investigation techniques for Carabinieri officers. On behalf of the High Council of the Judiciary he gave lectures at numerous study meetings and refresher courses for judges.
