European Data Protection Day: The most insidious threats and how to defend yourself
by Alessandro Longo
Every January 28th, we commemorate a topic that is increasingly central to our economic and social life, but also of enormous geopolitical interest. What can each of us do to protect ourselves?
A vademecum
The new dangers from AI
“There are three new dangers connected to AI,” says Fulvio Sarzana, lawyer and professor of information technology law. "Deepfakes today allow the indistinguishable reproduction of a person's voice, image, and movements, even without the consent of the person portrayed." "The ordinary citizen can find himself exposed to the uncontrolled circulation of his image, with incalculable damage, for example to his sexual identity." See the investigation now opened by the EU into social media X, which uses the Grok AI. AI can distort the identity of all of us because it can rework and alter our biographical data. They type our name into Google, and the AI now integrated into the search engine attributes to us things we've never done. Perhaps even criminal convictions. "Inaccurate and misleading data, which can then remain as a sort of 'brand' on the life and identity of the person concerned," says Sarzana.
The only way to combat deepfakes and AI's deception of our identities is to file a complaint with the platform in question and, if necessary, report it. "We remind you that you can exercise your rights to erasure and object to data processing under the GDPR, the EU privacy regulation," says Sarzana.
