The Lazio Region has been the victim of a cybercrime.

How it's proceeding in the Lazio Region
Officially, the Region and Italy are not negotiating with the criminals for a ransom to unlock the data. The ransom demanded, according to various sources, is in the range of several million euros, but it is usually the case, and to this end, the Lazio Region is reportedly contacting a specialized international company. Colonial Pipeline, the American oil pipeline blocked by ransomware in May, negotiated to reduce the ransom from €70 million to €5 million (paid, but partially recovered by the FBI).

Without a backup and without paying, the chances of unlocking the data are very remote.. “They can only be decrypted if the criminals used bugged ransomware, but they don't make these mistakes anymore,” explains Paolo Dal Checco, a computer forensics expert.

“The main problem is not the vaccination platform – which can be restored, together with the bookings – but the fact that the documents covering ten years of the Region's activity have been blocked”, explains Fulvio Sarzana, lawyer A digital specialist and former regional counsel (in 2005) in a case involving illegal system intrusion. "It's surprising, however, that in 16 years the Region hasn't secured its access, preventing a compromised computer from escalating across the entire network," Sarzana observes. "But there will be time to determine these and other responsibilities; now the challenge is to minimize the damage to citizens and the country.".
