EU to cap sms roaming prices

The European Commission is going ahead with plans to cap prices for sending SMS while abroad, but has held off for the moment on introducing similar regulations for data services. The EC unveiled a report from the European Regulators Group that showed the average price of sending an SMS while travelling in the EU was EUR 0.29 in the six months to March 2008, which is more than ten times the price for domestic texts. The ERG, which unites national telecom regulators, has recommended a cap on SMS roaming prices of EUR 0.11-0.15 per message, and EU information society commissioner Viviane Reding said she will introduce SMS pricing regulations in October.
